Spinning and Weaving

The Triangular Frame Book
by Linda L. Smith
Copyright 1994
Self Published paperback

Contains directions on building triangular looms in 3 sizes, the stand and a Fringe making tool. It has good illustrations and nice basic directions for weaving a continuous yarn shawl. It has 8 pages that cover designing a shawl and calculating the amount of yarn needed for the three different sizes. A good basic book that will have you weaving triangular shawls in no time. The wood working skills and tools needed are minimal and the weaving technique is fun.
Working with the Wool
by Mary Pendelton
Copyright 1974
ISBN 0-02-595500-4 paperback
This 167 page book will take you from the first whim of wanting a Navajo weaving to the finished project. It explains how to build a Navajo loom and warping frame and lists all of the additional tools and supplies you will need. If you want to prepare your own yarn it shows the traditional ways to prepare, spin and dye your fiber. Photos and illustrations clearly show how to warp and weave a tapestry rug. There is a very nice color photo section for inspiration.
The second half of the book goes into the same detail teaching how to use Hopi techniques for weaving mainly belts and sashes. Good directions on how to weave patterns with the pick up technique and floating warps.
How to Weave a Navajo Rug
by Noel Bennett and Tiana Bighorse
Copyright 1971
ISBN 0-87358-084-2 paperback
This book also gives complete directions on the Navajo loom and tools. It has step by step directions for weaving a 10 by 23 inch fabric to fold into a bag. Between these two books on Navajo weaving most of your questions should be answered.
The Care and Feeding of Spinning Wheels
A Buyers Guide and Owner's Manual
by Karen Pauli
Copyright 1981
ISBN o-934026-04-1 paperback
The title nicely explains what is in this one. This book will not teach you how to spin but it will give you a good working knowledge of Wheels. It explains how to find, identify and check the workability of spinning wheels. It shows how to make simple repairs yourself and explains what repairs should be done by a professional. It even tells you how to make your own wheel and how to operate and care for one. Everyone that owns a wheel or is thinking about getting one should read this book.
